I gave this talk at TEDxUNSW. It’s called Living Like It Matters.
The idea I wanted to go after is the one most of us inherit without ever agreeing to it. That life is a marathon, that you put your head down and run it, and that somewhere near the finish line there’s happiness and fulfilment waiting for you.
I ran that race myself. Senior executive early in my legal career, teams of up to 70 people, a multi-million dollar sales budget, and a family of six at home. I insisted on doing it authentically, and by the usual measures it worked.
What I’ve come to think is that the usual measures are the problem.
The way out isn’t a better strategy or a harder run. It’s stopping, turning around, and facing whatever you’ve been running from. That’s the uncomfortable part. It’s also the only part that changes anything.
The line from the talk I’d point you to is this one. If you’re looking for the saviour of your life, that’s easy. Look in the mirror.
In 2007 I turned my own life into a living experiment. I started developing the heart-centred work I do now. In this talk, I share the beginning of that journey.
